Agra Fort, also called Red Fort, large 16th-century fortress of red sandstone located on the Yamuna River in the historic city of Agra, west-central Uttar Pradesh, north-central India. It was established by the Mughal emperor Akbar and, in its capacity as both a military base and a royal residence, served as the seat of government when the Mughal capital was in Agra. The structure, a contemporary of Humāyūn’s Tomb in Delhi (about 125 miles [200 km] to the northwest), reflects the architectural grandeur of the Mughal reign in India. The fort complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.

Situated on the site of earlier fortifications, it lies on the right bank of the Yamuna River and is connected to another of Agra’s renowned monuments, the Taj Mahal (downstream, around a bend in the Yamuna), by a swath of parkland and gardens. The fort was commissioned by Akbar in 1565 and reportedly took eight years to construct. The walls of the roughly crescent-shaped structure have a circumference of about 1.5 miles (2.5 km), rise 70 feet (21 metres) high, and are surrounded by a moat. There are two access points in the walls: the Amar Singh Gate facing south (now the only means in or out of the fort complex) and the Delhi Gate facing west, the original entrance, which is richly decorated with intricate marble inlays. Many structures within the walls were added later by subsequent Mughal emperors, notably Shah Jahān and Jahāngīr. The complex of buildings—reminiscent of Persian- and Timurid-style architectural features—forms a city within a city.

t was the capital of Mughal Empire for a long time because of its centrality in the map of India. Later it fell into ruins as the capital moved to Delhi. When Akbar decided to move again to Agra, again because of its central location, he found it in a dilapidated state. The work of rebuilding the fort was once again commissioned, this time with sandstones from Rajasthan. These stones have a reddish tint hence the name ‘Lal-Quila’ or the Red Fort, but it is not to be confused with the Red Fort in Delhi.

This is a beautifully constructed fort with grand facades and ornamented towers. There are the galleries and terraces of Diwane-aam (for common public) and Diwane-Khas (for the VIPs and the royal families), where concerts of dance and music were regularly held as also meetings.
Situated alongside the Yamuna, this fort was the seat from where Akbar ruled as the emperor.
Later when Shah Jahan was the ruler, he built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife. The tower where Shah Jahan spent his last days offered him a good view of the Taj Mahal.
The Agra fort has now been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
In 2004 it was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
The fort of Agra is a monument that has had a lasting impact on the history of India and is also an architectural wonder.
