Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Hindustani pronunciation: [əʈəl bɪhaːɾiː ʋaːdʒpai]; 25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018) was an Indian statesman who served three terms as the Prime Minister of India: first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and finally, for a full term from 1999 to 2004. A member of theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was the first Indian prime minister who was not a member of the Indian National Congress party to have served a full five-year term in office.

Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee the iconic leader of BJP is the first Non-National Congress person who was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for a complete 5-year term (1998-2004). The 10th PM of India served as a Prime minister for 13 days in 1996. Apart from Prime minister he served as the minister of external affairs, elected to the Lok Shaba for ten times, represented Rajya Shaba twice and served as the Member of Parliament for Lucknow, UP. He retired from active politics in the year 2009 due to health concerns.  

India’s highest civilian honor “Bharat Ratna” was awarded to him on Mach 27 2015 at his residence by the President of India.  In the year 2014, the government of India declared his birthday 25th  December as the “Good Governance Day”. At the age of 93 (25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018), he died due to prolonged illness.
