Dengue fever can be defined as a debilitating viral disease spread by mosquitoes, not among humans. In serious cases, it can lead to severe pain in the bones, which is why it is called as ‘breakbone fever’. The first ever recorded case of probable dengue fever is mentioned in a Chinese medical encyclopedia from the Jin Dynasty (265-420 AD) which mentioned a “water poison” associated with flying objects. The first documented Dengue epidemics befell almost at the same time in Asia, Africa, and North America in the 1780s.
Each year, approximately 100 million cases of dengue fever are witnessed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, majorly in Asia, South America and Africa.
When it is mild, the symptoms of dengue fever starts showing within the first week of infection. They consist of:
Increase in body temperature
Signs of flu
Splitting headache
Muscle and joint pain
Stomach ache
Diarrhea and vomiting
Skin rash
When it gets severe, dengue fever symptoms can cause dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, which can even lead to death, although this is very rare.

Dengue is a viral fever transmitted through mosquito bites. The “Aedes” mosquito is the culprit. The disease is very prevalent in tropical countries like ours. Dengue is characterised by sustained high-grade fever, pain around, inside or behind the eyes, nausea and vomiting, abdominal discomfort, Diarrhea, muscle aches and measles-like red rashes all over the body. There are two types of dengue - classic dengue and dengue hemorrhagic. In the first type of dengue recovery is most likely to occur more quickly. But in the second type a decrease in platelet count can result in bleeding, organ failure, and even death. There are no vaccines against dengue. That’s why prevention is crucial. The vector “Aedes” mosquito breeds in stagnant fresh water and rainwater. So we must be vigilant in keeping our household areas clean. We must not allow water to stagnate in flowerpots, vases, tyres and puddles. Besides, we must protect ourselves from mosquito-bites. So we should always wear protective clothing like pants, long sleeves, and socks. We have to use mosquito nets and mosquito-repellant. Above all, we must consult a doctor if any fever persists for days.
