National flag is considered to be the most important national symbol of a country. In any international event, a country's identity is known by its national flag.

Our national flag is called \bf{Tiranga} (Tri-colour). Just three weeks before the independence of our country. i.e., on 22nd July, 1947, the constituent assembly adopted this flag. It is rectangular in shape. The ratio of its length and breadth is 3 : 2.

Our national flag is horizontally divided into three equal strips of three different colours i.e. \bf{\red{Saffron}} at the top, \bf{White} in the middle and \bf{\green{Green}} at the bottom. In Indian tradition each of these colours has its own significance. The saffron colour symbolizes courage and sacrifice. The white colour is the symbol of peace, truth and non-violence. The green colour at the bottom symbolizes prosperity. The green colour inspires us to work hard and utilize our natural resources fully to remove poverty and unemployment.

There is a wheel or Chakra of dark blue colour in the middle strip. It is the Dharma Chakra adopted from the Ashoka pillar at Sarnath. It has 24 spokes We ust Yollow certain rules while hoisting the national flag:

When ational flag is hoisted, the saffron band of the flag must be at the top.

No other flag should be placed either above or to the right of our national flag.

We must stand in attention position whenever our national flag is hoisted.

The national flag must be taken down in the evening before sunset.

During a procession, the national flag should be carried in the centre or right of the front line.

The national flag should be displayed on important government buildings such as the Rashtrapati Bhawan, Parliament House, Supreme Court etc. It can also be displayed on private buildings on some important national days such as the Independence Day and the Republic Day.

The national flag should not be torn or soiled.

When a national leader of our country or a dignitary of a friendly country dies, the national flag is lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.
