Sikkim has magnificent mountains, lovely hills and valleys, clear waterfalls, springs, lakes, rivers, and streams, as well as steep, undulating terrains, snow-covered mountains, and low lying land, with elevations ranging from 310 metres to 8586 metres from mean sea level. Many types of vegetation and fauna can be found scattered throughout forest area. The state is located in the Eastern Himalayas, a region rich in wildlife. Sikkim's forests are home to a variety of indigenous plants, uncommon and endangered animals, valuable medicinal herbs, etc. Sikkim is a haven for botanists.

In Sikkim, there are primarily five different types of forests:

  1. subtropical
  2. moist mixed deciduous
  3. moist temperate
  4. coniferous
  5. subalpine

The state features one national park and seven animal sanctuaries spread across an area of 7096 sq km, which is the largest percentage in the nation. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2016, Khangchendzonga National Park is the only national park in the state. Rural water supplies have been revitalised, wildlife populations have increased, forest gaps have been closed, and soil erosion has been more effectively controlled. To restore the degraded forest areas, numerous afforestation initiatives have been undertaken under various programmes and schemes, and tree-felling regulations for non-forest and private land have also been implemented.

According to the State of Forest Report 2017 released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and the Forest Survey of India, the tree cover outside the forest has also increased because the people of Sikkim are environmentally conscious of the conservation of their natural resources and the sustainable use of forest resources.
