Materialism is when people prioritize material goods over human relations. In materialism, people prefer owning material goods.

In the present era, life has become more materialistic as the system of the society has become monetary. Money has become the main factor of the society. People are living a fast paced life in order to own all material goods that can make their lives easier. However, what we do not understand is that material goods would not get us human relations. Human relations not only create a society but also play an important role in the psychological development of mankind. With growing materialism, people have been drawn away from the nature. The nature beauty of the world is a natural therapy for humans but being away from it has made us intolerant, aggressive, stressed and depressed. 

Life due to materialism is a mere mechanism; people have become robots that are in a race to win from one another that who would gain more material goods. People are slowly ignoring the importance of the natural cycle of life. The society is breaking into pieces; intolerant behaviours and wars are seen. Hence it is true to say that "materialism rots the system of society"
