Forests are areas of dense trees and foliage. The floral and faunal diversity in forests make them nature’s treasure houses. Forests serve an important ecological role. Forests are protected areas.

There are varied trees and plants that grow in a forest. There are large and small trees that may be flowering or non-flowering ones. Trees may be evergreen or deciduous. Climbers, creepers, shrubs bushes and grasses are all part of the vegetation in a forest.

With such a great floral diversity there is a large variety of fauna that inhabits a forest. There are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects that live in forests. Forests also have water bodies, and therefore provide habitats suitable for a great deal of wildlife to live in. There are both herbivorous and carnivorous creatures that inhabit forests. While herbivorous animals live on plant food, carnivorous ones eat flesh. Carnivores may prey on animals and feed on them, or feed on the carrion that is the kill of other carnivores. Large mammals like the lion, tiger and leopard, and animals like the fox and jackal are carnivorous. The majestic elephant as also the mammoth rhinoceros are herbivores. Many different birds and butterflies can also be seen in forests.

The food chain in a forest is always in balance unless disturbed by man’s activities. Such a disturbance and distortion affects the ecology adversely. Deforestation and poaching of wildlife that inhabits forests destroy the forest ecosystem. It causes ecological imbalance thus hampering the ecosystem’s health and sustainability.

Answer:

Forests are home to various types of flora and fauna. They are vital for our survival. They maintain temperature and prevent our surroundings from excessive heat. However, these deep, dark woods not only help in sustaining the lives of animals and birds, but they are also equally important for the survival of humankind. They provide raw materials such as timber, fruits, wax, honey, vegetables, wood, leaves for medicines and bark for paper.

Besides being a rich source of raw materials for human needs, they are a great source of maintaining wildlife. Trees prevent soil erosion- degradation of soil due to the removal of its upper layer. Not only this, but they also keep streams flowing and air pure that helps in providing us fresh oxygen and a clean environment.

Sadly, a large number of human activities such as deforestation, excessive use of trees for industrial purposes has led to its decline. Afforestation and ‘go green’ campaigns, reduction in the use of plastics should be practiced to protect our environment. We as humans should do our bit and grow more trees to save the forests so that we can pass on the beautiful flora and fauna to the coming generations.
