A parallel plate capacitor is a type of capacitor in which two conducting metal plates are kept at a distance parallel to each other with a dielectric substance fully or partially filled between the parallel plates that stores the charge. Charges +Q is present on one plate while -Q is present on other plates. A capacitor is basically used to store large amount charge in a small space. We cannot store charge on a single plate because to that we will also need to increase the potential of the plate and hence the size of it by a considerable amount otherwise the charge starts leaking into he atmosphere. This problem can be solved by placing two plates close to each other.

The principle of the capacitor is based on

the fact that the potential of a conductor is greatly reduced and its capacity increased without affecting the nature of charge stored in it by placing another earth (conductor with infinite capacity) connected conductor or and oppositely charged conductor in its neighbourhood.

Hope it helps
