Given :  Pareekh Jain, a first year student at IIM Bangalore, has taken 10 course, earning grade A (worth 4 points each), B (worth 3 points each) and C(worth 2 points  each). He does not receive any other grade. His grade point average (GPA) is 3.2,

GPA is calculated without taking into account the courses in which he  got a C, his GPA in the remaining courses would be 3. 333...

To find :  How many B's did he get

Solution:

10 Courses  Average GPA = 3.2

=> Total points in 10 Courses = 3.2  * 10  = 32

Let say in N subjects  he got C

=> Point in N Subjects = 2N

Remaining Points = 32 - 2N

Remaining Courses  = 10 - N

New average = 3.333.....

=> 32 - 2N = (10 - N) * 3.333...

=>  32 - 2N = 33.333 - 3.333N

=> 1.333N = 1.3333

=> N = 1

remaining Course  10 - 1  = 9

Score  = 32 - 2  = 30

Let say he got B grade in  x  courses

Then A grade in  9 - x  course

=> 4(9 - x) + 3x  =  30

=> 36 - 4x + 3x = 30

=> x  = 6

He got 6  B's
