Parenchyma is a called simple tissue because the cells dont have to divide...while xylem is called a complex tissue because the cells have the ability to divide.

Parenchyma is made up of only 1 type of cell's which are similar in function to 1 and another, so it's called a simple tissue.

A few characteristics of parenchyma includes :

  1. It is thin walled and it's cell's wall is made by cellulose.  
  2. They are living cells as the protoplasm persists even during maturation.

Functions of parenchyma includes : storage functions, performing photosynthesis and secretion of some substances.

Xylem is made of different types of cell's so it's is called complex tissues.  

Xylem consists of four elements. These are : Tracheids, Xylem Parenchyma, Xylem Fibres and Vessels, .
