Parental care in biology is the parental relinquishment of a male animal towards its offspring. Parental care is mostly associated with female animals and it is rare to see male animals do so.

In fish, seahorses, centrarchidae(sun fish), jaw fish and three spined sticklebacks are examples of parental care.

Seahorses brood eggs while centrarchidae guard and fan their nests. Jawfish keeps eggs in mouth till hatched and sticklebacks protect their offspring.

Parental care is exhibited by the following species of fish:

The care which the father and mother or either one provides to their offspring or young one till they get matured is called as parental care.

In fishes the following species exhibits parental care,

  • Seahorses: The male bears the egg and takes care of it till it get hatched.
  • Sun fish: This species trains up their young ones in skills such as nest guarding and nest fanning.
  • Jaw fish: In this species the caring is shared by both male and female. The female lays the egg, and there off the male protects them by keeping it in its mouth.
