Particles of matter intermix on their own with each other. They do so by getting into the spaces between the particles. This intermixing of particles of two different types of matter on their own is called diffusion. We also observe that on heating, diffusion becomes faster. Why does this happen?

This is because while heating the temperature increases and the kinetic energy also increases ,which leads to faster intermix of particles (diffusion).

Answer:

  • Upon heating, the diffusion becomes faster due to increase in the" kinetic energy of the particles".
  • The temperature rise increases the rate of diffusion. Diffusion is actually a passive transport where the particles travel down the "concentration gradient".
  • So with increase in 'kinetic energy' of the particles, the particle molecules vibrate much faster which makes the particles to move faster and will spread or intermix more rapidly.
  • Diffusion generally happens from a 'region of higher concentration' to a 'region of lower concentration'.
