question
Partition coefficient of iodine in ccl4 and water experiment implies the distribution law or not?
Answer
Partition coefficient is also known to be distribution coefficient. It is the distribution of solute such as iodine between the solvents carbon tetrachloride and water.
The molecular phase of iodine is similar to that of I2 in both carbon tetrachloride and water. The partition coefficient increases with increase in concentration of solute particles in the solvent but with the presence of water and carbon tetrachloride as solvent, the solution is diluted and thus partition coefficient will not changes with concentration of solvent in dilute solution.
While distribution law states the distribution of solute particle equally among the two immiscible solvent with diluted concentration and hence, distribution law may be applied to this experiment.
