When carbon dioxide is passed through lime water or calcium hydroxide solution, they react and form calcium carbonate.
The obtained solution is not very soluble, so a mist of fine particles of chalk, is observed.
This is why the lime water is described as cloudy or milky.
Next, carbon dioxide dissolves in the water to form carbonic acid, that dissolves the calcium carbonate, so the milky appearance vanishes.
