When the Japanese discovered how to make artificial pearls in the early 1900s, the practice of pearl diving naturally declined. Because of the discovery of oil in the Persian Gulf in the mid-1900s, jobs in the oil industry quickly took over as the most lucrative in the region.

We all know that UAE is known for oil, but its not the only thing that this nation is known for. Pearl diving is UAE's hidden gem. It was developed some 7000 years back and formed an important occupation and mainstay for local economies in the UAE.

However, with the development of cultured pearls the pearl diving industry in the UAE.  This happened in the 1920s which later combined with the Global depression in 1930s drastically affected the Gulf pearl industry.
