Sexual reproduction has been studied only in few species. It shows great variation from isogamy (P. bacillosporum), oogamy (P. vermiculatum) to somatogamy (P. brefeldianum). Most of the species are homothallic, except a few like P. luteum are heterothallic. Ascocarps are rarely formed. Based on the ascocarps, different genera can be assigned as Europenicillium, Talaromyces and Carpenteles.
