Let the larger number be a

And smaller number be b

According to first condition,

80% of b + 4 = 40% of a

=> 80b/100 +4 = 40a/100

=> 40a/100 - 80b/100= 4

=> 2a/5 - 4b/5 = 4

=> ( 2a - 4b)/5 = 4

=> 2a - 4b = 20

=> a - 2b = 10 --------(1)

According to second condition,

a = b + 125

=> a - b = 125 ------(2)

On subtracting equation 1 from 2, we get

(a - b) - (a-2b) = 125 - 10

=> a - b - a + 2b = 115

=> b = 115

Smaller number = 115

Now,

On substituting the value of b in equation (2), we get

a - 115 = 125

=> a = 125 +115

=> a = 240

Larger number = 240
