Percy Jackson discovers that he is a demigod son of the greek sea god, Poseidon. Zeus' lightning bolt gets stolen. Zeus thinks that Percy stole it for Poseidon. He says that the bolt should be returned before the summer solstice or there would be war Percy and his other friends decide that the true thief is Hades. So, Percy, Annabeth (the daughter of Athena) and Grover go on a quest to get back the lightning bolt to Zeus. They had to go to Los Angeles to enter the Underworld. So, they started travelling west. During the quest, they meet Ares. Ares asks them to do a work, and said that in return he would give them some money,clothes and food. After doing what Ares had told, Ares gives them a bag with all the money, clothes and food. Ares also arranges transport (a circus van) for them. The 3 of them travel to Las Vegas on the van and stay for a few hours on the Lotus Casino.But when they come out of the casino, 5 days would have got over and they would be having only 1 day remaining. They flee to Los Angeles and enter the Underworld. Then they get to know that even Hades' helmet is missing. Then Percy opens the bag which Ares gave and sees that the lightning bolt is in there. Then Hades threatens Percy, that if he doesnt give his helmet back, he would kill his mother. Percy said that he would come back for his mother later and took Annabeth and Grover back to the real world. They find Ares had caught the lightning thief, but had left him because he wanted war. Percy fights with Ares and retrieves the bolt and the helmet. The furies collect the helmet, and Percy rushes to olympus to return the bolt. When he gets back to Camp Half Blood, Luke tries to kill him, So, Luke was the true lightning thief. Then, Poseidon informs Percy that his mother is back from the Underworld .
