Because it is the third period the electrons can be filled only in 3s and 3p and now the orbitals present in 3s is 1 and in 3p it is 3, by adding them we get 4. We know that each orbital contains 2 electrons and so it will be 4*2 that is it can accommodate 8 electrons. Hence, the third period should have 8 elements.
