Answer: C) Drought

Explanation:

Drought is a case of long-term shortage of water supply, be it atmospheric (below average), excess water or groundwater. Drought can last for months or years, or it can be announced in as little as 15 days. [4] It can have a significant impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region [5] and cause damage to the local economy. [6] The dry seasons of the tropics greatly increase the risk of drought and subsequent veld fires. Temperatures can worsen drought conditions by accelerating evaporation.

Drought is a recurring theme in many parts of the world. However, this common drought has become a major and unpredictable phenomenon due to climate change. In fact, studies based on dendrochronology, or rings on intertwined trees, confirm that the drought affected climate change dates back to 1900. One can classify the effects of drought and water scarcity into three groups: environmental, economic and social. Environmental effects include drying up of wetlands, increasing wildfires, and loss of biodiversity. Economic outcomes include declining agriculture, forestry, wildlife and fisheries production, high food production costs, problems with water supply in the energy sector and disruption of municipal water supply.  Social and health costs include a negative impact on the health of people directly affected by the condition (overheating waves), high food costs, stress caused by poor harvests, water shortages, etc.  Prolonged drought has caused much migration and human suffering.

Many species of plants, such as those of the Cactaceae family (or cacti), have drought-tolerant conditions such as reduced leaf litter and waxy cuticles to improve their drought tolerance.  Some others survive the dry seasons like buried seeds. Permanent drought produces dry environments such as deserts and plains. [7] Most dry environments have a naturally low productivity.

The longest drought in recorded history was recorded in the Atacama Desert in Chile (400 years). [8] Throughout history, people have viewed drought as a “disaster” because of the impact it has on food security and on society as a whole. Humans have often tried to explain drought as a natural disaster, a man-made catastrophe, or a result of supernatural forces.
