When you see someone lonely or sad, you should keep a distance from them, until unless that person is very close to you or if that person is asking you to comfort him or her. When a person is lonely or sad, he or she is going through a lot of things; they are thinking about plenty of things at a time. Each and every person has a different perspective.
To be honest, people know how to deal with the situations or they figure out on their own. They do require some console or comfort level from their loved ones, but the best advice is to leave them alone until unless they are asking you to be involved in a situation.
