Peter can run a kilometre in 5 minutes and 30 seconds, and Rocky can run in it in 5 minute and 40 seconds. Peter can beat Rocky by 29.41m.

First, we have to find out the distance travelled by Rocky when Peter reaches the finishing line i.e at 5minute and 30 seconds.

Next we need to subtract this distance from the distance which Peter has already covered i.e. 1 km.

It takes Rocky 5 minute and 40sec (5 * 40/60 = 5 * 2/3 = 17/3 minutes) to cover 1 km.

In 1 minute, Rocky covers = 1 / (17/3) = 3/17 km

∴ In 5 minute and 30 sec ( 5 * 30/60 = 5 * 1/2 = 11/2 minutes), Rocky covers =

(3/17)*(11/2) = 33/34 km.

∴ Peter can beat Rocky by 1 - (33/34) km = 1/34 km = 0.0294km = 29.41m.
