Petroleum is
formed from
the
organic materials
(animals fossils)
deposited in the
layers
of
sedimentary rocks.
The rocks in
which petroleum is
formed are called
source
rocks.
Petroleum moves
An offshore oilfield
through pores in the
source rocks and other rocks and get stored in
depressions below layers of non-porous rocks. Thus,
underground storage of petroleum are formed. These
reservoirs have natural gas trapped in the space above
the oil.
Petroleum is a very important component for a
country's economy. A variety of products like petrol,
diesel, kerosene, wax, plastics and lubricants are
obtained by refining crude mineral oil. Other by-
products include raw materials for chemical fertilisers,
synthetic fibres and drugs.​
