Iron do not burn on heating but iron fillings burn vigorously when sprinkled because the iron is large in size and it need 1000 degrees celcius to melt but iron fillings are like powder which do not need the above things.

Explanation:

when heat is supplied to iron it does not reach to its ignition temperature.But in case of iron fillings,they attain ignition temperature as they are comparatively smaller particles. They gat larger surface area and start burning
