Heya,

pH of a substance indicates the acidic ; basic or neutral nature of the substance.

It is measured on a scale which has 0 to 14 numbers.

It is completely based on concentration of hydrogen ions.

It helps us to identify if a substance is acidic or basic or neutral.

Applications of pH in our daily life are:-
1. It is used to determine the nature of the soil before farming. If the soil is acidic it needs to be neutralised.

2. pH of sea water is very essential for oceanic cycles

3. pH of mouth determines the acidic nature which leads to tooth decay.

There are many more uses of pH.

Hope it helps u...

★ pH
==============================================

☆ pH tells us the concentration of H+ and OH− ions in a given solution and indicates the acidic or basic nature of a dilute solution.

☆ Soren Peder Lauritz Sorensen, a Danish scientist, introduced pH scale in 1909.

☆ He developed it to distinguish between the strength of acids and bases.

☆ We can measure pH from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline) with 7 as neutral on the pH scale.

• 7 → Neutral

• Below 7 → Acidic

• Above 7 → Alkaline.

☆ pH = −log10 c

where, c = hydrogen ion concentration (moles per litre).

★ pH value applications in our daily life
==============================================

☆ In our body, there are many fluids with a very specific and fixed pH.

☆ In our body, the bio-chemical processes are also dependent on pH.

☆ The pH of our blood is in the range 6.8 to 7.8 which is optimum for life processes because proper equilibrium of chemicals present in blood plasma and serum is maintained within this range.

☆ Our teeth enamel is made of calcium phosphate which is a hard substance that does not dissolve in water.

But our teeth start decaying, when the pH of the saliva in our mouth falls below 5.5.

We should brush our teeth daily with a basic toothpaste to prevent this.

☆ Ideal soil for cultivation of paddy should have pH between 5 and 8.

Farmers add fertilizers or lime or ash to it, when the pH is above or below this level, so that crop production is not affected.

The colour of the the hydrangea plant's flower depends on the pH of the soil in which it is
cultivated.

When the soil is acidic, the flowers are blue.

When it is slightly alkaline, they are pink.

☆ etc.
