The reaction between Phenol and chromium trioxide CrO3 produces benzoquinone. This reaction takes place in the presence of a reagent called jones reagent.

What is Jone's reagent?

  • Chromium trioxide and sulphuric acid together are known as Jone's reagent.
  • The reaction is given below.
  • CrO3 (or Na2Cr2O7) + H2O + H2SO4 → H2CrO4 2 H2CrO4 → H2Cr2O7 + H2O
  • Jone's reagent oxidizes alcohol to give carboxylic acids and ketones as a product therefore it is an oxidizing agent.
  • In the same way, phenols are also oxidized by using the same reagent.
  • After oxidation reaction Phenols give quinones and hydroquinone.
