The first reaction is the method of preparation of benzene from phenol

Y= Toluene
This reaction is Friedel-Craft alkylation reaction

Z = Benzoic acid
This reaction is the example of oxidation reaction and KMnO4 is strong oxidising agent which oxidises -CH3 group (attached to benzene) into -COOH group.
