Photoperiodism refers to the response of plants to the lengths of dark and light periods. Many angiosperms, or floweringplants, have a protein that can sense seasonal changes in light. A plant will flower depending on these changes in light levels. Each plant has a different photoperiod that it requires to flower and propagate. Plants generally fall into three photoperiod categories: long-day plants,short-day plants, and day-neutral plants.

Explanation:

The ability of plants to measure the period of light and dark is termed as photoperiodism. Many physiological events like  seed germination, flowering etc. are result of photoperiodic responses. The minimum period of light that is needed by the plant to trigger the physiological event is termed as the critical Day length.Based on their photoperiodic response, plants are classified as: Long day plants which flower only when days are longer, short day plants that flower when the day lenths are short and day neutral plant that do not respond to the day lengths. Other than these the plants are also classified as long-short day plant which require neither very long day nor too short day.
