Explanation:

  • India can be divided into three main divisions which differ from one another in physiography, structure and stratigraphy.

These divisions are as follows:-

  • Peninsular India
  • Indo-Gangetic Plain
  • Extra-Peninsular India
  • Peninsular India- It has extremely variable physiography.

There are peneplained ancient fold mountains , plateaus, massifs, elongated graben like valleys and coastal plains.

It is a stable plateau and remain unaffected by orogenic movements of post Cambrian age.

  • Indo -Gangetic Plain- It is deep crustal trough filled with quaternary sediments.

It's origin and structure is intimately related to the rise of Himalaya.

  • The plain extends from Assam in the east , through Bengal,Bihar and U.P up to Punjab in the west.
  • Extra Peninsular India-The extra- peninsular India lies at the northern extremity of the country.It is made up of the Himalayan mountain ranges in the north and Arkan-Yoma ranges ranges in the east.
  • The upper reaches of Indus and Brahmaputra Rivers mark its northern boundary
