Abstract
Santra, A. and Jakhmola, R.C. 1998. Effect of.defaunation on animal
productivity. J. Appl. Anim. Res., 14: 103-116.
During last two decades, researchers have been engaged in
determination of role of rumen protozoa in metabolism of difirent
nutrients. The effect of defaunation on animal productivity viz feed
digestion, body growth, wool pmduction were not always positive.
Some reports indicated that protozoa were essential part of the rumen
habitat and their exclusion fmm the rumen ecosystem has a harmful
effect on the animal perfirmame. While others opined that protozoa
were wastefil partners of rumen habitat and are a burden on rumen
energy availability. In this paper, effect of defaunation on the
performances of ruminant animals is discussed
Key words : Defaunation, protozoa, bacteria, nutrient digeetibility,
growth rate.
1. Introduction
The rumenflora is diverse, consisting of 10g-lO1O bacteria, 105-106 protozoa
and 103-104 fungi per ml of nunen fluid. Over 200 species of bacteria, 10
species of protozoa and eight species of fungi have been described.
