i) They looked very anxious. In this sentence, looked is an ‘intransitive verb’, as it is not followed by an object.  

ii) I bought a ‘new shirt and pants’ for the wedding of my sister. In this sentence, bought is a ‘transitive verb’, as it is followed by the object a new shirt.  

iii) He spoke at the top of his voice. In this sentence, spoke is an ‘intransitive verb’, as it is not followed by an object.  

iv) The watchman was yawning in the morning. In this sentence, yawning is an ‘intransitive verb’, as it is not followed by an object.  

v) His father scolded him for his poor performance in the examination. In this sentence, scolded is a ‘transitive verb’, as it is followed by the ‘indirect object’ him.
