The sacred basil, or tulsi, is a plant that is found in many Hindu homes. A bird like a parrot is kept as pet by some Indian families. Dogs, cats and cows are a part of many people's domestic lives. By caring for these, our families inculcate in the children a love for plants, birds and animals at a young and impressionable age.
The sacred basil plant's leaves are a requirement for religious purposes. The parrot amuses us by learning to utter a few words off and on. The dogs reciprocate our affection and guard our homes. The cows are like mothers who provide us with a basic necessity, milk. The cats rid our houses of pests like mice and rats.
