Places A and B are 100km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another from B at the same time at different speeds. If they travel in the same direction they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two cars?

Answer:

let the speed of car A be x

let the speed of car B be y

CASE 1 : when the cars are moving in the same direction to C

A.------------------------.B------------.C

100 km

distance covered by car A , AC = speed *time = X*5=5x

distance covered by car B ,BC = 5y

AB = 100 KM

AC - BC =100

5x-5y=100

x-y =20. (eq1)

Case 2 : when the cars are moving towards each other to D

A.--------------.D--------------.B

distance covered by car A , AD = speed*time = 1*X = X

distance covered by car B , BD = 1*y = y

AB =100 km

AD + BD =100

X. + y =100. (EQ 2)

solve eq1 and eq2 by any method of your choice

speed of car A =X = 60 km

speed of car B = y = 40 km
