planning is a process in which a person decides what to do, how to do and by whom it will be done it is futuristic and it bridges the gap where we are and where we want to reach and controlling is backward looking as controlling means be on the path which we have decided earlier during planning but if we are not on the path then we look back to our past performances to take corrective measures that's why planning is forward looking and controlling is backward.
