The corporation, which has planned to plant 10,000 tree saplings, has so far planted 500 saplings as part of its effort to increase green cover within the city, Commissioner P. Vijayalakshmi has informed.

Distributing prizes to winners of recently organised environment awareness competitions for students here on Thursday, she said both developed and developing nations had to declare war against environment pollution and global warming after realising the adverse impacts of these problems being caused by a range of reasons. The Tamil Nadu government, on its part, had banned production, stocking, sale and use of 14 types of use-and-throw plastic products and it had been actively enforced by urban and rural civic bodies. The Tirunelveli Corporation, besides organising surprise checks in business establishments to seize banned plastic products, environment awareness programmes were being organised through a range of activities including mobile van campaign which was started on Thursday.

“The Corporation has 1.50 lakh residences. If a tree is planted in each house, we can add 1.50 lakh more trees to the existing greenery which will be greater contribution towards conserving the environment and reducing global warming. The students in each family should plant a sapling,” she said.
