A nation covers a large area and a sizeable population. Typical nature of various regions and the diverse type of its people reflect in several ways. The Government introduces many schemes for its people and in the national interest too. Therefore, to be able to effectively carry out national planning, Governments have to depend on statistical data of the past and make projections for the future before it gets down to laying out its plans for the short, medium and long term. To gauge how effective its past plans were, the growth in the population etc the planners need statistical data.
