Deficiency symptoms are morphological changes in plants, indicating nutrient deficiency. Deficiency symptoms vary from one element to another. The plant part in which a deficiency symptom occurs depends on the mobility of the deficient element in the plant. Elements such as nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium are highly mobile. These elements move from the mature organs to the younger parts of a plant. Therefore, the symptoms for the deficiencies of these elements first appear in the older parts of the plant. Elements such as calcium and sulphur are relatively immobile. These elements are not transported out of the older parts of a plant. Therefore, the symptoms for the deficiencies of these elements first appear in the younger parts of the plant.

NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Deficiency symptoms of essential elements:

 The morphological changes due to deficiency of some element are called deficiency symptoms.

 Deficiency symptoms disappear when the deficient element is provided to the plant.

  The parts of plants that show deficiency symptoms depend on mobility of the element in plant.

 For elements that are mobilized within plants from older to young developing tissues, the deficiency symptoms appear first in older tissues.

 For example, deficiency symptoms of N, K and Mg are visible first in senescent (old) leaves. In older leaves, biomolecules containing these elements are broken down, making these elements available for mobilizing to younger leaves.

 The deficiency symptoms tend to appear first in young tissues when elements are not mobilized from mature organs.

 For example, elements like S and Ca are the part of structural components of cell therefore these are not easily released.

Note: Two factors responsible for appearance of deficiency symptoms are:

• Deficiency of element in the medium in which plants are growing.

• Mobility of element
