Plastic is harmful because it is non-biodegradable which means it stays in our environment of thousands of years. And it also releases tons of toxic chemicals in the atmosphere. 

Plastic can be replaced with below materials based on individual needs such as 
- Metal
- glass
- Reusable shopping bags
- milj protein clothing for bags
- starch based polymers
- cotton
- wood
- bagasse
- Bioplastics - fairly new concept where plastic is made of corn or other farm material rather than petroleum

Plastic is continuesly harming our lives and environment because they don't decompose and produce harmful components on burning them. They are the major portion of garbage now a days.
We can save our environment from harmful effects of plastics by using cloth or paper made bags for daily purposes like they were used in the past.
