Addition polymerization occurs through free radical polymerization through the steps viz Initiation, Propagation and Termination. At the initiation process, benzoyl peroxide initiator is used which by light or heat application undergoes homolytic cleavage along peroxide linkage to form free radicals. These free radicals further attacks monomer forming the other and hence polymerization goes on.

Benzoyl peroxide has weak peroxide linkage due to electron witrawing capacity of aromatic ring and homolytic cleavage by light, favors. Whereas alkyl groups are electron pushing and increases electron density around peroxide linkage, thereby making it difficult in alkyl peroxide to undergo homolytic cleavage by action of light.
