1) Since, sodium is a very reactive metal, it tends to react with oxygen to form sodium oxide but this is an unstable compound and soon reacts with hydrogen to form sodium hydroxide. When burning sodium (Na) in oxygen (O2), you get sodium oxide (Na2O) and/or sodium peroxide (Na2O2).

2) Lithium (and to some extent sodium) form simple oxides, X2O, which contain the common O2− ion . Sodium (and to some extent potassium) form peroxides, X2O2, containing the more complicated O2−2 ion. Potassium, rubidium and cesium form superoxides, XO2. containing the superoxide ion, O−2.
