Rainbow formation takes place due to dispersion of light. We observe a rainbow when it is raining along with sun in the sky.
Dispersion refers to the scattering of white light into 7 colours while passing through a prism.
In case of a rainbow, sunlight which is a type of white light enters the raindrops which act as a prism. The sunlight undergoes *total internal refraction* and comes out in form of the seven colours of a rainbow.
Light of greater speeds travel fast and get bent the least. This is why Red bends the least while Violet bends the most.
Hope it helps!
