Given x^4 + 1/x^4 - 8 = 314

= > x^4 + 1/x^4 = 314 + 8

= > x^4 + 1/x^4 = 322

= > x^4 + 1/x^4 + 2 = 322 + 2

= > x^4 + 1/x^4 + 2 = 324

= > (x^2 + 1/x^2)^2 = 324

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 = 18.

Subtract 2 from both sides, we get

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 - 2 = 18 - 2

= > (x - 1/x)^2 = 16

= > x - 1/x = 4.

Therefore the answer is 4.

Hope this helps!
