Explanation:

As regards the status of the women in tribal society, anthropologists have expressed different and opposite view

They are dived into two groups with opposite views. Some of them say that women in these societies enjoy a very high status. Others express the view that women are generally a depressed group.

This divergence in views is due to the organizations of Indian tribes.

One of the important determinants has been the type of society, matriarchal or patriarchal ones. The status of women is expected to be higher in matriarchal societies, than the patriarchal societies.

Status of Women in Matrilineal Societies:

The khasi practice the matrilocal and matrilineal system in this society descent is traced through the mother or the female ancestress. These ancestress are often described in folk tales as princess of tribal legends. Property is inherited through the female line, i.e. daughter inherits from mother. As regards the income of a Khasi man, his mother is entitled to get it before his marriage.

After his marriage, his earnings go to his wife who maintains his house. He resides with his mother in her house till his marriage and then he goes to the house of his wife. The Khasi woman controls the religious and ceremonial life of the family. But the Khasi male worships and performs the other ritual to the dead ancestors of his matrilineal family. Among the Khasi, the matrilineal and matrilocal residence despite being temporary, assign a prominent status to Khasi women.
