1. reductant or reducing agent is the one which helps in reduction by getting oxidised itself.

a) H2 is the reductant as it gets oxidised.

2. oxidant or oxidising agent is the one which helps in oxidation by getting reduced itself.

b) CuO is the oxidising agent or oxidant as it gets reduced.

c) Zn + CuSO4 -----------> ZnSO4 + Cu

analysis: Zn in atomic state the oxidation state is 0 , in ZnSO4 it's ( Zn) oxidation state is +2 . so, it had undergone oxidation and also it is the reductant.

CuSO4 the oxidation state of Cu is +2 , in its atomic state i.e.Cu the oxidation state is 0.so, it had undergone reduction and also it is the oxidant.
