The Scholars’ Revolt of 1868 was one of the
early movements of the Vietnamese against
French political domination and the spread of
Christianity. It was led by officials of the
imperial court who were uncomfortable with the
spread of the Christian religion and
consolidation of French political power in
Vietnam. They led a general uprising at Ngu An
and Ha Tien provinces where over a thousand
Catholics were massacred. Catholic missionaries
had been active in these areas since the early
17 century and by the middle of the 18
century had converted as many as 3,00,000 to
Christianity. The French eventually were able to
suppress the revolt. However, this rebellion
remained an inspiration to many of later patriots
and movements.
