(a) Explain how the air exerts pressure on the inside surface of the tyre.

Air pressure is caused when air particles hit the walls of the tyre. The more often the particles hit the walls, and the faster they are moving when they do this, the higher the pressure. This is why the pressure in a tyre goes up when more air is pumped in.

(b) When a car moves, the temperature of the tyres increases.

State what will happen to the pressure in the tyres and explain your answer.

The pressure will increase

because

Temperature increase  increases the kinetic energy, and hence the speed, of the air molecules in the tyre. The increased speed of the molecules will increase the number of collisions per second with the tyre wall. This in turn results in an increased force, and therefore increased pressure on the tyre wall.
