Explaination:

(1) Fertilization is initiated by the binding of acrosome-intact spermatozoa to the zona pellucida (ZP3).

(2) Binding of ZP3 to the cognate receptor on the spermatozoon induces the signal transduction cascade leading to the acrosome reaction.

(3) Penetration of the acrosome-reacted spermatozoon through the zona pellucida matrix.

(4) Subsequent to completion of the penetration process, the egg and sperm plasma membranes fuse, resulting in fertilization and activation of zygote development. Fusion of egg and sperm plasma membranes leads to the corticle reaction which is responsible for loss of binding affinity of zona pellucida for spermatozoa and avoidance of polyspermy.
