Let the number of students in the class be x.

Given that half of the students were playing the field = x - (x/2)

= x/2.

Given that three fifths of the remaining went to an ice cream shop. = (3/5)(x/2).

Given that rest 8 stayed in the class.

= > (x/2) + (3x/10) + 8 = x

= > (x/2) + (3x/10) = x - 8

= > -x/5 = -8

= > x = 40.

Therefore the number of students in the class = 40.

Hope this helps!
