When the incident ray from the spot makes angle less than the critical angle c, the light ray is refrated outside and will be seen.
When the incident ray from the spot makes angle greater than the critical angle c,
the light ray will not be seen due to total internal reflection.
Let, as shown in figure, the light ray makes incident angle that equals to critical angle c at A and B.
for critical angle we have, sin c = 1/μ , where μ is refractive index of glass.
hence we have sin c = AC/AO = 2/3, then it can be worked out as AC/CO = 2/√5 . since CO = 0.5 cm, AC = 1/√5 cm
Then area to be covered = π×(1/√5)×(1/√5) = π/5 sq.cm.
