when you smoke, the pollutant particles get stuck in our lungs. our lungs are sensitive and only allow extremely small particles to go in or out. if larger particle(of smoke for say), comes in our lungs, it gets trapped. excessive smoking causes our lungs to get blocked from smoke and pollution and gets cancer or other lung diseases. not only smoking, but staying in polluted environment also causes the lung damage. hence, it is advisable to wear a mask to filter the particles to some extent.
